MAGNETAWAN – Fifteen kilometres south of Magnetawan lies 500 acres of wilderness. Over the last 10 years property owner and long-time hunter John Hetherington has spent countless hours managing the acreage and improving the habitat to try and sustain a healthy population of whitetail deer.
Hetherington is a member of the Quality Deer Management Association, a group of dedicated hunters who believe they needed to do a better job respecting and taking care of the animals they hunt annually.
“I grew up hunting and fishing. I have been doing it for the better part of 60 years,” said Hetherington. “I just decided that it was time to give something back.”
Around 2006, Hetherington got involved with a program offered by the Ministry of Natural Resources, which provided funding to buy seed, trees and fertilizer to create habitat for wildlife. After a few years the program folded, and Hetherington has continued to fund his own wildlife management project ever since.
